Mathematics
"My favorite part of studying at 鶹ҹ is the community of friends and classmates I’ve built since arriving here. Almost all math majors know each other and are friends. Additionally, I’ve been able to make friends beyond the walls of Maxim Doucet thanks to the minors I am pursuing.”
You should major in mathematics if:
- You enjoy critical and analytical thinking.
- You’re drawn to the science of numbers and their manipulation.
- You can communicate effectively and are excellent at time management.
Numbers are the language of the universe. Learn to speak it by majoring in mathematics.
Math is not only a building block for the sciences, but it can be applied to nearly every professional field.
As a math major, you’ll explore the complexities of calculus, algebra, statistics, and other high-level math. You’ll learn logic, reason, and understanding.

Life as a Math Major
Conferences & Speakers
As a mathematics major, you will have the opportunity to attend conferences such as the Louisiana-Mississippi section of the Mathematical Association of America. Our math majors attend every year, consistently place in the student and paper competitions, and present their own research.
Math Lab
Tutoring is available in the Math Lab every weekday. A team of mathematics graduate students stand by, ready to help.
Student Organizations
Share your passion for math with like-minded students through one of the math-centered organizations on campus, including the Math Society or the less formal Math Club. Meet, interact, and learn with fellow math enthusiasts.
Research
The Department of Mathematics has an active group of faculty mentoring undergraduate research projects.
